Course Timeline

Day 1: Introduction to Tableau and Data Connections

1. Introduction to Tableau (1 Hour)

  • What is Tableau? Overview and importance of data visualization

  • Installing and setting up Tableau Public/Tableau Desktop

  • Tableau workspace overview: Menu, toolbars, data pane, shelves, cards, and sheets.

2. Connecting to Data Sources (1 Hour)

  • Types of data connections: Excel, CSV, databases.

  • Joining and blending data.

  • Managing data connections and data extracts.

3. Tableau Data Preparation Tools (1.5 Hours)

  • Understanding metadata and data types in Tableau (dimensions vs. measures).

  • Pivoting and splitting columns.

  • Filtering and sorting data.

  • Working with data hierarchy.

4. Hands-On Exercises (1.5 Hours)

  • Connect Tableau to a sample dataset (e.g., Global Superstore dataset).

  • Practice blending and joining datasets.

  • Create a basic sheet with basic filters and sorting.

Day 2: Creating Visualizations

1. Introduction to Visualizations (1 Hour)

  • Creating bar charts, line charts, scatter plots, and pie charts.

  • Using Marks card: Color, size, labels, detail, and tooltip.

2. Using Filters and Slicers (1 Hour)

  • Adding filters to visualizations.

  • Dimension and measure filters.

  • Creating slicers for interactive dashboards.

3. Formatting and Enhancing Visualizations (1 Hour)

  • Understanding metadata and data types in Tableau (dimensions vs. measures).

  • Pivoting and splitting columns.

  • Filtering and sorting data.

  • Working with data hierarchy.

4. Intermediate Chart Types (2 Hours)

  • Dual-axis charts.

  • Highlight tables and heat maps.

  • Bullet charts and waterfall charts.

  • Hands-On Exercise: Create a dashboard with multiple visualization types (e.g., bar chart, pie chart, and line chart).

Day 3:  Building Dashboards and Storytelling

1. Introduction to Dashboards (1 Hour)

  • What are dashboards, and why use them?

  • Adding multiple sheets to a dashboard.

  • Adjusting layout, size, and spacing.

2. Interactivity in Dashboards (1.5 Hours)

  • Types of data connections: Excel, CSV, databases.

  • Joining and blending data.

  • Managing data connections and data extracts.

3. Storytelling in Tableau (1.5 Hours)

  • Understanding Tableau Stories.

  • Building a story with sequential dashboards.

  • Creating impact through storytelling (narrative + visuals).

4. Hands-On Exercises (1.5 Hours)

  • Build a dashboard showing company performance KPIs and present it using the Tableau Story feature.

Day 4: Advanced Features in Tableau

1. Calculated Fields and Tableau Functions (1.5 Hours)

  • Creating calculated fields.

  • Mathematical, logical, and string functions.

  • Building quick calculations (e.g., profit ratio or YoY growth).

2. Using Parameters (1 Hour)

  • What are parameters?

  • Creating parameters for user input and using them in fields.

  • Practice: Create a parameter to switch between different measures in a chart.

3. Level of Detail (LOD) Calculations (1.5 Hours)

  • Fixed, Include, and Exclude LODs.

  • Using LODs for advanced analytics (e.g., cohort analysis).

4. Hands-On Exercise (1 Hour)

  • Build a dashboard with advanced features like calculated fields and parameters.

Day 5:  Advanced Analytics and Final Project

1. Using Analytics Tools (1 Hour)

  • Adding analytics features to visualizations (trend lines, reference lines, and distributions).

  • Forecasting and clustering in Tableau.

2. Connecting to Data Sources (1 Hour)

  • Introduction to geographic data in Tableau.

  • Creating maps: Symbol maps and filled maps.

  • Adding layers to maps.

3. Final Project Prep (1 Hour)

  • Define the project scope (use a dataset, such as sales data or employee data).

  • Plan and design the project: Key KPIs and visualizations, storytelling strategy.

4. Project Time (1.5 Hours)

  • Build a comprehensive dashboard for a real-world scenario (e.g., Sales Performance Dashboard, Customer Analysis Dashboard, etc.).

  • Present your analysis and findings.

5. Q&A and Course Wrap-Up (30 Minutes)

  • Recap of the key concepts learned.

  • Answer questions and discuss further learning resources.
